Leonard Cohen songs, especially their lyrics, are unmistakably distinct. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on who you ask. That right there is the beauty of music, it’s subjective and personal for each individual. Still, you will not find many artists like the maestro himself.
‘Closing Time‘ is from Cohen’s 1992 album The Future. It’s upbeat, almost danceable sound, plays opposite the words that indicate an end is near, much like “closing time” at a bar. It also features one of the best lines I’ve heard in a song….. “And the Johnny Walker wisdom running high.”
Originally a poet and novelist, Cohen switched to music in the 60s. His debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, was released in 1967. Most would consider his 1984 single Hallelujah to be his best and most popular song. Given a listen to his songs and his lyrics, and you’ll see that Leonard Cohen is very much a gifted storyteller in his own right.
